Description
The two 1850’s petitions made by the people of Mount Alexander to the Governor of Victoria, reproduced on the following pages are interesting sources of names for those tracing their family history in the Castlemaine district. They also form a fascinating aspect of Australian goldfield history. Gold was discovered in the Castlemaine area in October 1851. By October of the next year, 35000 people had rushed to the Mount Alexander goldfields – later known as Castlemaine, which became a renowned alluvial goldfield. The amount of alluvial gold found in the first six feet from the surface was said to be unequalled in wealth anywhere in the world. Compiled by Clare Gervasoni & Dorothy Wickham.
